When we think of Marrakech, we think mainly of palm trees, golf courses, swimming pools and the old city, its Medina, souks and riads. But less than an hour from the city, the landscape changes completely.
The road winds its way through the Ourika Valley, following the turns and detours of the river. Quickly the altitude rises.
Just 70 km from Jemaa El-Fna Square, one of the highest peaks in the Atlas Mountains and its famous ski resort of the same name, Oukaïmeden. All winter long, the snow is abundant and the public is rushing in abundance. As far as possible, it is therefore better to avoid Moroccan school holidays.
The resort is equipped with lifts and the ski area is between 2,500 and 3,200 metres above sea level. But if we go to Oukaïmeden it is not to ski.
We go first because the ride is beautiful. The road leading to the resort offers an exceptional variety of landscapes and colours. Over the course of the kilometres, you will inevitably experience the feeling of living a unique moment, by penetrating into the depths of the country.
From village to village, there are many shops. There is something close by, the same products as in the medina but at lower prices. We will therefore take advantage of this excursion to stop in a carpet shop, for example, and buy the most beautiful of the Beni Ouarain, for about a third less than what we would have paid in the souks of Marrakech.
Finally, the station itself is worth the trip. The snow-covered peaks, under a bright sun and a navy blue sky offer visitors an extraordinary sense of well-being. Feet in the snow, we will have lunch on the terrace and in a T-shirt at Chez Juju, a real local institution.
On the slopes, more folklore than skiing.
Young and old alike are having a great time with the means on board: makeshift equipment or tinkered sleds. We will laugh at this permanent show and this childish spirit that make the magic of these Moroccan moments.
